Do the laws protect our children?
I thought so until June of 1999 when my beautiful baby boy Adam Biles died. Just 13 days after his second birthday my new husband of one month was watching my three children while I was at work. I thought my son was safe. I later found out that when I left for work that it would be the last time I would ever see Adam alive again. Mark decided he wanted to watch a movie and he wanted Adam to go to sleep. So he fixed my two year old son a mixed drink of rum and Mountain Dew. Adam died chocking on his own vomit due to alcohol poison. Mark was charged with Felony Child Abuse and Involuntary Manslaughter.
Adam's Autopsy showed his blood alcohol level was 0.10 at the time of his death.
So how much time do you think he got?
If you are like me you would think that he was going away for a long time - as I felt he deserved.
Fact - He Didn't. The laws state that the sentence for Felony Child Abuse is a minimum of 10 months to a maximum 68 month depending on your prior record.
Fact - Mark severed two years and two months and also received 3 years probation to do when he got out.
*Is this justice?
*Aren’t our children our future?
*How can people who take the future away from our children be made to give up such a small portion of their own future.
Our goals are simple:
1. More active time in prison.
2. A national registry that requires anyone convicted of a crime against a child be made to register and that there be active notification to the community. (active - mailings to local residents)
3. As a community we need to make our state and federal officials aware that the current laws are unacceptable.
4. Send a warning out to all would-be child abusers that if you harm a child, you will be severely punished.
Note: I can not change what Mark received or bring Adam back. However, I can’t stand by and watch another Adam not get the justice they deserve.
